Mechanical  Engineering Lead Manager:



Manages a Group of 20 to 30 mechanical, aero, controls, and/or system engineers developing first-of-a-kind hardware for defense aerospace applications.  Establishes relationships with internal customer Divisions to understand needs for hardware development in their mission areas; jointly develops program concepts; prepares presentations and written proposals; plans staffing, budgets, schedules, and work breakdown structures; leads hardware development, integration, and testing (functional, environmental, and system demonstrations); manages Group facilities, equipment, and instrumentation; reports on progress to internal and external sponsors.  Responsible for overall Group project management, quality and mission assurance, schedule, and cost control.

Defines personnel needs, interviews candidates, and recommends hiring of engineering staff and support personnel; directs and monitors staff technical progress, capabilities, and growth on a daily basis;   reviews and develops personnel performance, writes evaluations, and proposes salary increases.  Teaming with administrative staff for financial and contractural support, leads procurement of hardware development by subcontractors.  Responsible for safety policy implementation and labor relations with bargaining unit representative service staff.  Leads the development, direction, and execution of Group strategic plans in coordination with the Division Office.



PhD or MS in Engineering (Mechanical, Aero, or Controls)



Five to ten years of engineering management experience.


Desired Skills:

Excellent management, leadership, and interpersonal skills. Strong technical presentations and writing.  Technical expertise in mechanical, aero, controls, and/or systems engineering.  Successful record of project management experience in defining and tracking engineering performance, budgets, and schedules.  Ability to technically manage hardware development by subcontractors.
